Over the past few Sundays, we have been allowing The Gospel of Luke to help us prepare for “an unexpected hour” (12:40). I believe that preparing and estimating the cost of any venture is a wise move.

As September approached, families scrabbled to get children ready for school.  It was though an “unexpected hour” had arrived and people had waited until the last minute to prepare.

Jesus struck a cord with many when he said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (12:34).  Many have to admit that treasures are related to the busyness of the world instead of getting to the business at hand, promoting and proclaiming the Lord Jesus Christ.

At Algiers UMC, we are seeing the fruits from last years ministries.  We have estimated the cost of these ministries and realized the hour has come.  We can not wait any longer to welcome the stranger, help the needy, reach out to the poor, care for the children, and widows.  The treasure we have at hand, the hand of God upon us, is more precious everyday and God’s Spirit is continuously leading us on our journey.

We need others to make this journey with us.  We need volunteers to be in mission with one another, as we grow in discipleship, minister to children, youth, and adults within our church and our community.  We need people to estimate the cost of being involved “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  We need your gifts and talents!

Jesus said to his disciples, “Where is your faith” (8:25)?  Maybe the question should have been, “Where is your treasure?”  What is important to you?  Does the world appear more inviting than the kingdom of God?  Has the world overshadowed the kingdom of God, for you and yours?

I invite you to not wait until the last minute to experience a fulfilling life in following Christ, for one never knows when “your life is being demanded of you” (12:20).  There are faithful people that shouldn’t have to make the journey alone and there are many looking for a faith that shouldn’t have to make that journey alone.  The journey is 24/7.  It is an ongoing process.

This month, get involved.  Get more out of life.  The Creator has programmed you for service, not for idleness.  It makes good sense to prepare and estimate the cost.  Sunday school, worship services, Xtreme Youth, STAIR, After School Special, MDO, JOY, TAP, WOW, and choir is a wonderful starting place for preparation.   The hour has approached.  Are you ready?

Invite a friend.  Invite your family.  Invite your neighbor.  We are getting ready and would like to help others get prepared for the “unexpected hour.”   See you at your house, the house of the Lord, where treasures are found.   Blessings to each of you.   May Christ’s peace be with you.
