From your pastor…
I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. (Isaiah 43: 19)
The older we get, the more we like the familiar, routines of our lives. It is harder to open ourselves to try new things and new adventures. But I do not believe the familiar saying is true that “you cannot teach an old dog new tricks!” No matter our age, we can still seek out the new things in life and learn and grow and even develop new hobbies or skills. Sometimes, the familiar can become so comfortable to us that it becomes a rut, and we don’t even realize it.
A new thing is going to happen right next door to our church in Algiers in the coming month or so. Our neighbor, Delores Watson, is going to try something new in the yellow house next to us. I think it will be an exciting new adventure. The yellow house building has been the location for a dry goods store, a donut shop, and the home of many residents over the years. Now it is going to become a community center for health and wholeness. It is being set up as a center for yoga, massage therapy, and acupuncture. There will be affordable fees based on your income level. The idea is to help the community to become healthier. I am very excited about it!
The owner, Delores, told me that they would not be open on Sunday mornings so that there would be ample parking for our church activities. I also told her that I would promote the center when it opens and the schedules are available. Some of us may want to try out yoga or get a massage. Sounds good to me! Those of you who have been long term residents of Algiers have seen many changes come and go.
Life is more interesting when we have new adventures and experiences. I am going to pray that this venture is successful and helpful to our Algiers community. There are many new residents who have moved here in the past few years. Let us be intentional about welcoming newcomers, informing them of the many wonderful opportunities in Algiers for families, and inviting them to come and worship and serve with us at our church. God is doing many new things in Algiers!
Grace and peace,
