Unshakeable
Since we have been given a kingdom that is unshakeable, let us give thanks to God.
–Hebrews 12:28
Laura Hillenbrand’s book, Unbroken: A WW2 Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, is the true story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who became a WW2 army bombardier, who was shot down in 1943 over the Pacific. He drifted in a life raft for 47 days battling sharks and starvation until he was captured and imprisoned in a Japanese POW camp. For 2 ½ years he was subjected to savage abuse.
After the war, he returned to America a hero, but his spirit was so crushed that even after he regained his health, he descended into the depths of depression and alcoholism. But then, because of a life-altering experience he had at a religious rally, his faith was rekindled, and the resilient spirit of this man rose up again to embrace a new life.
He once told a reporter, “If I thought I had to go through those experiences again, I’d kill myself.” How many times did he feel like doing just that? But he didn’t, for through it all, there was something inside of him that could not be defeated, a light that could not be extinguished. He remained unbroken.
In our lesson for this Sunday we read about something we all have within us which, in spite of the “dangers, toils, and snares” we may ever endure, remains “unshakeable.” Plan to be present as together we give thanks for the indestructible, unconquerable Spirit of God.
See You Sunday!
