The Third Sunday of Advent
This week we will light the pink candle for JOY
This Sunday we will light a purple candle for hope and a purple candle for peace. But then we will light a pink candle for joy. Did you say pink? Pink as in “it’s a girl”? Pink as in bubblegum? Pink as in flamingos? Why pink in the midst of all the purple?
It is because for centuries the church observed Advent in the same way we observe Lent–as a season of serious self-examination and penitence. Purple, also used during Lent, is the color associated with penitence. Thus, no joyous Christmas carols could be sung until Christmas Eve, an austere practice which was difficult for ordinary people to accept. It was in response to their complaints that the priests declared the 3rd Sunday of Advent to be a “day off” from penitence, a “bye week” for singing carols, a “time out” for joy and laughter. Thus, the third Sunday of Advent became known as “Gaudete” Sunday. It means “Rejoice!” It means “Lighten Up!” In the midst of all the purple, let there be pink!
That’s what this Sunday is all about! With our Choir’s Joyous Music and our Kid’s Pop-Up Pageant, joy will be the order of the day! I got a preview of the music on Monday, and it was wonderful! Don’t miss it! See you Sunday!
Grace and Peace, Callie
“Story of Love”
Sunday, December 14, 11 am
As the choir shares its beautiful Christmas music, the children and youth will share a very informal re-enactment of the story of Jesus’ birth in a family-style “pop-up” nativity. There will be scenery, props, and costumes to help the kids and choir tell the old, old story! Don’t miss it!
See you Sunday!
Callie
