Remember My Baptism?

  • What if you have never been baptized at all? Does this mean you are not “saved”?
  • What happens if a baby dies before he or she has been baptized?
  • What about those of us who were baptized as infants and have no memory of it whatsoever, does that still count? At what age does it start to count?
  • What if you were baptized in a church that you no longer belong to?  Does that render it null and void?
  • What if you were just sprinkled on the head with a little bit of water, does that mean you are not quite as baptized as the person who was dunked all the way under?
  • Will baptism make you a nicer person, resistant to sin, sort of like a vaccination?  Is it possible for its effects to wear off?  Does it ever expire?
  • If I get baptized and then 1 year later rob a bank, is my baptism revoked?

There are those who believe that once you are baptized, even if you break all Ten Commandments ten times a day your baptism is still valid—once saved, always saved.

But then there are those who believe that even if you’ve been baptized ten times, hould you mess up, even just once, you will fall from grace and have to get yourself re-baptized.

Good grief.  No wonder many people have washed their hands of the whole kit-n-kaboodle.

If you have ever wondered about any of these questions, then this Sunday, the day on which we remember Jesus’ baptism, is for you.  I hope to see you at church!

Grace and Peace,
Callie
