The Day They Said Goodbye to Jesus

This Sunday is the day on which we remember the Ascension of Jesus–that is, the day the disciples said goodbye to him. Would they never see him again?

No! In fact, the stories preserved in scripture help us to know that although Jesus had died, his Spirit was alive with them and in them.

Everywhere they turned they saw evidence of his life and love, stronger than death. As Frederich Buechner wrote, “we can never nail him down, not even if the nails we use are real and the thing we nail him to is a cross.” Or, as Walter Wink has put it, “Killing Jesus was like trying to destroy a dandelion seed-head by blowing on it.” It only spread the love and life of Christ across the entire world. To this day, by the power of the Spirit, we know he is everywhere–and ever-near.

That’s what this Sunday is about. I hope to see you at church!

Grace and Peace,
Callie
