Deep Calls to Deep

“Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me”
–Psalm 42:7

We New Orleanians, who live so close to the ocean, who have survived one hurricane season after another, who have witnessed what storm surge can do, and who have seen flood waters consume whole neighborhoods, can easily identify with the powerful images in this verse from Psalm 42. But the psalmist is not talking about the weather. Using the metaphors of crashing waves and wild winds, he expresses how overwhelmed he feels by life itself. He is in deep trouble. He feels like he is hopelessly drowning. And so he calls from “out of the depths” of his profound need to the One whom he believes is deeper still. Is there a lifeline between his own sinking spirit and the deeper, stronger Spirit of God? Yes, says the psalmist: “Hope in God whom I shall again praise, my help and my God” (42:11).

With yet another anxious storm season upon us, along with all the challenges you and I already face, we need to know that we too have a lifeline, a deep connection from our souls to God’s own Spirit. No matter how deep the water, ours is a God whose unfathomable love is deeper still! May that profound, life-saving connection be a source of hope and courage to face whatever tomorrow may bring!

Grace and Peace,
Callie
